Situated at the eastern foot of the Continental Divide, beside Lake Helena, in the center of the Rocky Mountains, the City of Helena is the capital of the U.S. state of Montana and seat of Lewis and Clark County. Helena is also the main city of the Helena Micropolitan Statistical Area, which embraces the entire Jefferson and Lewis and Clark counties. Helena is often nicknamed as the Queen City of the Rockies. The total population of the city during 2006 was 27,885; whereas, the total area comprised by the city is 14.0 square miles, all land. Helena was initially discovered in 1805, by whites, who were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town was first called Crabtown, but later, it was named Helena.
The community was established in 1864 shortly after gold was discovered along Last Chance Creek, by a group of gold prospectors, known as the Four Georgians. Today, this area serves as Helena's main street is named Last Chance Gulch. While the city quickly grew as a supply center for area mining camps, it was soon chosen as the capital of the Territory of Montana, by 1874. Helena then incorporated as a city in 1881. In 1889, Helena developed into the state capital.Today, the city proves to be a financial, commercial, and transportation hub for an agricultural and mining district. The insurance industry, government, and tourism, all play an important role for the economy of Helena.
