The name was given to this old Union Township on April 17, 1889 after the spring of pure cold water that flowed in the crossroad near its northern boundary. On March 28, 1894, a referendum resulted in the change of name and government form of this community and Boiling Springs became the Borough of East Rutherford. William McKenzie became the first mayor of the borough and soon it established as one of the significant parts of New Jersey region.
