Located in Cape Girardeau and Scott counties in Southeast Missouri of the United States, this is the largest city in Cape Girardeau County and can be accessed easily from all the major cities of America.

Cape Girardeau is among the most visited cities of America. The city is famous for its accommodating nature, good infrastructure and booming cultural scene. It also attracts because of its rich history full of many glorious events.

The city is named after Jean Baptiste de Girardot, an adventuresome French soldier who established a trading post in this region in 1773 while it was populated by more than 20 Native American tribes.

It was somewhere in 1793, when Don Louis Lorimier was given land grant of this area by the Spanish government. Many trappers and river travelers soon discovered this welcoming community. They called the place Cape Girardot in honor of Jean Baptiste de Girardot.

The settlement thrived rapidly under Lorimiers intelligent government and continuing promotion. While some of his companions named it Lorimont, the name Cape Girardot gained popular acceptance among the regions small population.

The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 brought the Missouri region into American possession at the cost of 2 cents per acre. At this point, Louis Lorimier donated four acres for the establishment of a seat of justice.

As a result, town was officially founded on February 3, 1806 and was incorporated on December 18, 1808. While Lorimier died in 1812 and buried in historic Old Lorimier Cemetery, Cape Girardeau remained shinning as his gift to the nation.

The city of Cape Girardeau started flourishing in 1835 as a river boom town. It was the busiest port between St. Louis and Memphis. Until the Civil War, the Riverfront bustled with activity as a commercial center and as an inviting port of debarkation for steamboat passengers.

Cape Girardeau evolved a lot during most of the 1800s. However, during the Civil War, it was occupied by Union forces who built four forts to protect the city and river. For a brief period in 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant set up headquarters in Cape Girardeau before moving his headquarters to Cairo, Illinois.

A minor skirmish was fought just west of town in 1863, but fortunately Cape Girardeau was spared the devastation that claimed other cities. In the post-Civil War years, Cape Girardeau grew quite astonishingly. With the establishment of public education in 1867, the introduction of rail service and advances in agriculture and industry; the city became an important economic hub.

The real pride of the city came in 1873 when a teaching university was founded here. This is now called Southeast Missouri State University and provides higher education to more than 8,000 students in all disciplines.

Cape Girardeau now serves as the regional hub for education, commerce, and medical care. Not only citizens, it is a perfect delight for tourists as well as the city offers unlimited fun options for everyone.
