Bridgeport was primarily a part of Stratford Township. The borough of Bridgeport was chartered in 1800 and was incorporated in 1821. Not before 1836, it was incorporated as a city. It lies within the Humid Continental climate belt, thus receives warm to hot and humid summers and cold, snowy winters. Bridgeport strengthened when it gave birth to the Frisbie Pie Company. Bridgeport is planning to build new schools and to modernize existing buildings. Therefore it has begun a large school construction and renovation program. Bridgeposts public school system consists of about 30 elementary schools, three comprehensive high schools, and an inter-district vocational aquaculture school.
About 23,000 students are part of the Bridgeport Public Schools, making it the second largest school system in Connecticut. Also, the University of Bridgeport and Housatonic Community College call the city their home.
Performing Arts
Bridgeport receives strong performing arts vibes and has been the three-time home to a weekend long festival called Gathering of the Vibes. The festival held in 1999, 2000 and 2007 and featured arts, music and camping mainly.
