Established in 1863, in Gallatin County which is 2,517 square miles in size, Bozeman has a population of 27,509 at the 2000 census. It is the fifth largest city in the state. The city sits in a high mountain valley at an elevation of 4,795 feet and is surrounded on three sides by the Bridger, Gallatin and Tobacco Root mountains.
The area of Bozeman had been occupied by Native American tribes, like Shoshone, Nez Perce, Blackfeet, Flathead, etc., for many years. These people had made their homes here. However, the Gallatin Valley was not permanently held by any particular tribe.
The city is named after John M. Bozeman, who was the founder of the Bozeman Trail. Bozeman residents are known as Bozemanites. The city has borne many prominent artists, scientists, and performers.

Home of Montana State University, Bozeman was elected an All-America City in 2001 by the National Civil League. Outside Magazine has rated Bozeman one of the fifteen best sport cities in the U.S.
