Prior to Inca occupation of the area in the 15th century, a popular oracle in the Rimac valley was known to the tourists as Limaq. The oracle was finally demolished by the Spanish with a church built in its place instead. However the name carried on whereby the chronicles show Ychma being replaced by Limac as the known name.

There are very large parks in Lima located near the downtown area. Some of the names are Park of the Reserve, Park of the Exposition, Campo de Marte and the University Park. World's biggest fountain complex is also located at the Park of the Reserve known as the Magical Circuit of Water. Having about seven thousand factories, the metropolitan area leads the industrial progress of the country. The factors that help towards this are available manpower, cheap infrastructure and the passages and highways in the city. Industrial areas that are most prevalent here are food, textiles and clothing. The products that are greatly manufactured here are Chemicals, leather, oil derivatives and fish. Most of the economic activity occurs in San Isidro, a district. The industrial activity has its place in the part which runs towards the west of Downtown Lima to the airport in Callao.

The industrialization process started in Lima in the 1930s. The 1950s saw the manufacturing contributing to 14% of the GNP. Seventy percent of consumer goods were being produced in Peruvian. Apart from the business and trade activities, the architecture of Lima holds great value also with such prized colonial structures as the Monastery of San Francisco. The French architecture has had a big impact on these structures. With the advent of the twenty-first century, glass skyscrapers have crept up in the city's financial district not to mention numerous other architectural and real state projects. Lima has great scenic value also with beautiful parks and gardens enriching the land. It also has the world's largest fountain complex. Summer season attracts lots of tourists due to the beaches at the northern and southern corners of the city. To cater to the comfort of beachgoers, numerous restaurants, clubs and hotels have been opened in these places. The night life is also very colorful with a vibrant and active theater scene.
