Iowa City is located in Johnson County, in the state of Iowa, United States. This particular state is located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America, which people refer to as the American Heartland sometimes. The name Iowa has been derived from the Ioway tribe; one of the many first American Indian tribes to have settled in USA. This is a state of varied economy, culture, and landscape. Located along the Iowa River, Iowa City was the second capital of the Iowa territory before becoming the first capital of the State of Iowa. According to the last census of 2000 the total population of this city is some 58,830 people and 25,202 households. Out of these households 21.2% had children under 18. The city was initially created by an Act of Legislation in 1839, as the then Governor wanted to move the capital to the center of the territory of Iowa. But even after that, it was not officially considered as the capital city until 1841. In 1876 the capital was moved to Des Moines. Culturally, Iowa City is an extremely rich city. Home of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, it boasts of having produced many prominent authors and has also been the host of the Nobel Peace Prize nominated International Writing program. In 2004 Iowa City was named as the third best small Metropolitan Area in the USA by Forbes Magazine and in 2008 the city was named the world's third City of Literature by UNESCO.
