The area of Humble was first settled during the early 1800s, and the first man, who is largely believed to get settled here, was Joseph Dunman, arriving in 1828. However, the man, after whom the city has been named, was Pleasant Smith Humble, often referred to as only Plez, who arrived here right before the Civil War. Humble was the man behind who initiated development in the area, such as, he first acquired land near River San Jacinto, and then began operating a ferry near the area, today, where Highway 59 crosses the river. Humble also became the justice of the peace for the area. Then in 1886, a post office was opened by Pleasant Humble, in his own home, thus, the name Humble was adopted for the township.
Humble soon became a hub for commercial activity, due to the region's vast timber, and then originated as crossroads community for transporting lumber. Two hotels, two general stores, a school, and a hospital were first made in the early days of the town. In 1902, began a shallow oil production, and soon, by 1904 oil stared to gush out in the area. With the discovery of the oil, people also started flooding towards Humble and it became a tent city. By 1905, the Humble oil field became the largest one in Texas, thus the local entrepreneurs formed the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which still exists, and is known as Exxon Co. USA. With the passage of time, oil started reclining and many land-owners went back to lumbering, truck farming, and dairy farming. The town incorporated in 1933, and remained a small and a quiet city until 1969, when the Houston Intercontinental Airport opened. Many residential areas also started to develop outside the City limits, including Forest Cove and Kingwood. To cater the growing needs of the consumers, Humble established some of the finest business and retail facilities in the area. Therefore, today, Humble is seen as the commercial, social, and the economic center for the entire Northeast Harris County, TX. It is truly a thriving city, and has also been known the greatest salt dome field, which it still produces. However, the basis of Humble's economy has always been petroleum.
Served by the Humble Independent School District and also by the Lone Star College System, the City of Humble is home to schools including Humble Elementary School, Jack M. Fields, Senior Elementary School, Lakeland Elementary School, Ross Sterling Middle School, Humble High School, Atascocita High School., and Quest High School. The city is also home to the Harris County Public Library; whereas, the city's original library opened in 1921. There are several points of interests in Humble, including various restaurants, stores, venues, museums, theaters, cinemas, nightclubs, and a lot more. To name a few popular sites would include the Pam Lychner Unit, which is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice state jail for men. It is situated in unincorporated Northeast Harris County, east of Humble; the Old MacDonald's Farm includes the twelve different petting zoos; the Deerbrook Mall, which is a perfect destination for shopaholics; the Blue Angel Nigh Club, where a variety of music is played; the Cactus Moon Blues CafE; and the Rowdy's. Recreational opportunities can be availed at the Cypress Trails, Mercer Arboretum & Botanic Gardens, and also at the Pour House. In short, Humble is a great place to live and visit.
