Hildesheim is a German city that lies in Lower Saxony, and is located some distance away on the banks of the Innerste River. The city became a religious center when the Bishop of Hildesheim made the city its seat in 815. Thus, the city was ruled by clergy for four centuries and afterwards the citizens gained some supremacy with the construction of a town hall. The city was annexed by the Kingdom of Hanover in 1813 after the Napoleon-led wars. The air raids almost destroyed the city in 1945. The residents had to go through ordeal since three-fourth of the structures were brought down. Many of the churches were reconstructed after the war.

In the year 1978, the University of Hildesheim was constructed which was later on renovated in the 1980s. Another renovation work in progress is the reconstruction of ?Unpended Sugarloaf? which is a wooden house with a unique form, and the building is supposed to be completed by 2009. Hildesheim has some great attractions carrying tourism value. The Marketplace (Makrt) has been considered a very beautiful marketplace which was refurbished in 1984-1990 after its demolition in an air raid in WWII. Then there is another building constructed in 1529 which also became a target during World War II, and was rebuilt in the late 1980s. The building has been beautified with exotic paintings and German proverbs. As of now, the building has a restaurant and a City Museum.

Another heritage building which speaks of Hildesheim's grandeur is the Monument of the Synagogue that was destroyed in fire in the 1800s and later renovated with its foundations rebuilt with all their majestic appearance in 1988. Then we have a fa?ade that is lined aristocratically with Roman statues and medallions. Saint Magdalena's Church is also one of the highlights of Hildesheim which has a wooden altar and other pieces of art. Steuerwald Castle is another landmark which is at little distance from Market Place being originally constructed in the 14th century. The building is presently used for hosting weddings and concerts.
