Chillicothe was the first and the third capital of Ohio. It is also the heart of the Chillicothe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city occupies an area of 9.7 sq miles, where 9.5 sq miles of it is land and 0.2 sq miles of it is water.

Residents of Chillicothe define the area to be the foothills of the Appalachians, as it is surrounded by farming communities throughout. The City of Chillicothe is governed by a mayor-council structure and Joseph P. Sulzer is their current mayor.

The name Chillicothe has been derived from the Shawnee name Chalahgawtha, meaning- principal town. It was contrived by General Nathaniel Massie on his own land. The region was the center of the ancient Hopewell tradition, which flourished from 200 BC until 500 AD, and it was after the American Revolution that most European settlement came to this area.

Chillicothe became the capital of Ohio in 1803, which lasted till 1810. However, in 1812 the capital was moved back to Chillicothe. Then in 1816, the state legislature voted to move the capital to Columbus to have it near the geographic center of the state, where it would be more accessible.

The migrants, who moved to Chillicothe, comprised free blacks, who came to a place with fewer restrictions than in the slave states. They created a vibrant community in Chillicothe, where they aided runaway slaves coming north. The city had also become an important stop for refugees on the Underground Railroad, during the American Civil War.

Today, Chillicothe is considered as a city very rich in culture and history, and a city that offers a wide range of services and facilities to its people. Featuring a vast variety of public parks, including Yoctangee Park, Poland Park, Strawser Park, Manor Park, Goldie Gunlock Park, Pine Street Park, Veterans Memorial Park, and Western View Park situated inside the city, the citys one of the best places to appreciate, where one can also explore the entire history of Chillicothe, is Adena, which was the home of Thomas Worthington, one of Ohio's first two United States senators.

Adena is an Ohio Historical Society site and has been restored. Another good place to explore the culture of the city is the 152-year-old Majestic Theater, where many top caliber artists, such as Laurel and Hardy, and Milton Berle, have performed. The annual Feast of the Flowering Moon Festival, exemplifying the citys rich Native-American history, draws crowds of approximately 85,000 to Chillicothe each year.

Another festival includes Southern Ohio Storytelling Festival, being celebrated on the Friday and Saturday after Labor Day in September. Concert performances by a number of highly praised and valued storytellers are featured in the festival.

Then there is The Fall Harvest Festival, which is held in Chillicothe's Yoctangee Park on the first weekend of October. The festival has entertainment, crafts, flea market, and more. There are loads of night-clubs and pubs for the people who want to enjoy the night-life at the city, along with some top-notch cafes and restaurants.

The city also features some of the finest antique stores and other shopping centers from where one can satisfy all his/her shopping needs. Chillicothe is a great place to explore and experience!
