Central City
Located at just 35 miles west of Denver, Central City is situated in the Rocky Mountains. It is known as the Richest Square Mile on Earth. The city is a Home Rule Municipality in Clear Creek and Gilpin counties in Colorado, USA.
Featuring six casinos, Central City"s two most popular destinations or attractions are known as the Teller House and the Central City Opera House. Central City ranks among the most historic, yet entertaining cities of Colorado.
The discovery of The Gregory Lode was made by John Gregory in 1859, in a ravine which was in a close proximity to the Central City. Soon, the gold rush was on, and within sixty days or so, the population grew to 10,000 people in search of their riches.
Once the tents of William Byers and his few companions were pitched on open ground, directly in the middle of the mining district, the Central City was born. It soon became the primary mining center in Colorado, and earned a status as The Richest Square Mile on Earth.
One of the City"s main attractions was built in 1872, and was called The Teller House Hotel. However, the city had to face a big disaster caused by a breakout of fire in 1874. All the city buildings got burnt down to ashes. Thus, the town was re-built with bricks and stones.
Most of the buildings built during that time still stand today. The second most prominent attraction of the Central City opened in 1878, known as the Opera House. The culture of community theatre began from there onwards, which ranged from vaudeville to opera.
Acording to the U.S. census Bureau, 2000, the total area comprised by Central City is of 1.9 square miles, none covered with water, and a population of 515. The city sits on at an elevation of 8,496 feet. Over the years, the city has been visited and toured by several famous and popular people. Central City has also been a shooting location for many popular films, such as The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox.
Other than Central City"s two major attractions, Teller House Hotel and the Opera House, the city has many other great attractions too. Fortune Valley Casino is a great place to hang out. It serves as an amazing casino, as well as a very fine hotel. It is one of Colorado"s largest, yet the most popular hotel/casino spots.
Another very popular casino in the area is known as Doc Holliday's. Dostal Alley, Century Casino, Famous Bonanza and Easy Street Casino are a few other casinos worth mentioning. One of the very famous city landmarks is found in Easy Street Casino, known as the Gold Coin Saloon.
The history and culture of Central City can be experienced at the city"s museums, including Washington Hall, and Thomas House. Other city landmarks include, Belvidere Theatre & Concert Hall, and the Masonic Monument noting the location of Colorado's First Masonic Lodge.
