The elevation is 16 feet, and Bow also appears on the Bow U.S. Geological Survey Map. It is included in the Mount Vernon-Anacortes, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bow"s original and former name was Brownsville, after William J. Brown, who abode the town site in 1869.
The town grew in population largely with the onset of the railroad and, thus, the need for a post office was felt. One theory suggests that inspired by the growth brought by the railroad, Brown suggested the new name of Bow, after the large railway station in London, England, which in turn was named for the bow or poplar tree, however, another theory suggests that the City of Bow was named after homesteader James T. Bow.
