In 1511, Bielefeld fell to the House of Kleve with the county of Ravensberg. By 1520, the old and new town was integrated. Fortification of Sparrenburg Castle was completed till 1550. Bielefeld and the county of Ravensberg become the part of Brandenburg in 1648. Fast forward to three centuries and we see this Bielefeld and neighboring communities incorporated as the Bielefeld city in 1930.
The industrial revolution of the 19th century has left its mark on Bielefeld. It was during those times that the city became famous for its economy. Ravensberg Spinning Mill and the former Durkopp engineering works are some of the legacies of those times.
A little change in the geography of Bielefeld occurred in 1973 when Northrhine-Westphalian boundary changed causing the town of Bielefeld and its district to be merged together.
Today, Bielefeld combines the advantages of a modern city and charm of an historic center. While Sparrenburg Castle, Ravensberg Spinning Mill, Bielefeld University and Linen Weaver remain its major tourist attractions, the town also offers interesting opportunities for sports and relaxation and colorful cultural events.

Rochdale Park is also a delightful experience so as the Linen Weaver Statue that is a symbol of Bielefeld's economic development.

There are a total of eleven museums in the city of which Historisches Museum, Huelsmann Museum, Bauernhaus Museum, Farmhouse Museum and Museum Waldhof are the most famous ones. Bielefeld offers exciting and relaxing leisure opportunities in the Teutoburg Forest, animal park Olderdissen, Botanical Garden and Obersee Lake that have become popular destinations for family outing.
