It was founded as a mining camp in the Colorado Silver Boom and the small community was renamed from Ute City to Aspen in 1880. This name was given because of the abundance of aspen trees in the area.
In its peak production years of 1891 and 1892, Aspen surpassed Leadville as the United States' most productive silver-mining district. The booming period continued and different features of Aspen attracted people to this small city.
