Ames was founded in the year of 1864, for the sole purpose of having a station stop on the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad. The name was an inspiration by a famous 19th century U.S. congressman Oakes Ames of Massachusetts; he had been a really influential person for the idea and act of building of the transcontinental railroad.
Ames was developed near an ideal location of a railroad crossing on the banks of the Skunk River. There are lots of recreational activities and annual festivals, being held in the city for the fun loving inhabitants as well as for the tourists.
The city has built a large resource recovery plant. The whole trash of the city is collected and sent to the plant for recycling. The heavy things like glass, metals and other things are removed, and the light trash is used as a fuel to produce the power. The total area the city is 21.6 square miles.

The basic professional structure of the local community is directly linked with the state and federal institutions of the city.

At present, Iowa State has more than 60 buildings, which include a recreation center, residence halls, a student union, and many buildings with special reference to ISU's many different majors.
