Ames is a beautiful name, like the city itself, which is situated in the Central American State of Iowa, and it is almost 30 miles north of Des Moines in Story County. It has the considerable growth as one of the main cities of the 'Ames, Iowa Metropolitan Statistical Area' which covers almost all of Story County, Iowa.
The population of the city was 50,731, according to the 2000 census. Ames is definitely the largest city in Story County, but still the county seat is reserved for Nevada, almost 8 miles east of Ames.
Ames has the honor of presenting to the world, with the Iowa State University, which has the leading Design, Engineering, Science, and Agriculture colleges. Ames also provides the chance for the conduct of Straw Poll, which is highly important for the Republican Party presidential nomination process.
Ames was founded in the year of 1864, for the sole purpose of having a station stop on the Cedar Rapids and Missouri Railroad. The name was an inspiration by a famous 19th century U.S. congressman Oakes Ames of Massachusetts; he had been a really influential person for the idea and act of building of the transcontinental railroad.
Ames was developed near an ideal location of a railroad crossing on the banks of the Skunk River. There are lots of recreational activities and annual festivals, being held in the city for the fun loving inhabitants as well as for the tourists.
