Nickel Creek
Nickel Creek is a well-known American acoustic music trio. The band members includeSara Watkins (violin/fiddle), and her brother Sean Watkins (guitar), and Chris Thile (mandolin). The band also has a 4th guest position that is filled by Mark Schatz (string bass). Musicians that have filled this slot in the past have included Edgar Meyer, Scott Thile, and Byron House. It has its origins in bluegrass, which the trio refers to as progressive acoustic.

Nickel Creek's musical style has apparently evolved over its last three albums. From playing contemporary bluegrass it appears to now include indie rock elements. The band also covers songs by bands like Pavement, Elliott Smith, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan. History:Early days: 1989-1999Nickel Creek was formed in California [1989]. The band originally had Scott Thile, Chris' father, playing string bass. The Watkins' and the Thile's met after Sean Watkins and Chris Thile took mandolin lessons under the same teacher. Sean was just twelve years old at that time. Nickel Creek played for several well-known bluegrass festivals through the 1990s. By the mid 1990s, the three of them had to settle for home schooling in order to accommodate their hectic and tight schedule.Nickel Creek: 2000-2001
Alison Krauss took over as Nickel Creek's producer after the first two albums were released. Krauss also helped to further carve the band's style. In 2000, she helped the band to produce their self-entitled album. So far, it is considered to be their best release, and it has sold more than 900,000 copies. The band has additionally received 2 Grammy nominations for this album.

In 2002, This Side was released, and was quite different from the first three that were totally bluegrass. Despite the main influence of bluegrass being present throughout the album, there were other genres present. These were indie rock and folk rock.

Why Should the Fire Die?: 2005:
After This Side went gold for it sales of 550,000 copies, Nickel Creek launched Why Should the Fire Die? in August 2005. This album had more rock and pop influence. Regarding the band's style and genre in this album, Chris Thile said: We actually feel like more than a bluegrass band that stretched out. We are a band that incorporates bluegrass into our music. There's been a problem in perception. 'Bluegrass band leaves the fold' (uses a news announcer voice). No, no, no, no, no.

Hiatus and Farewell Tour: 2006-Present:
In 2006, Nickel Creek said that the band would not make any more recordings together, and that their tour scheduled through 2007 would be final one for an indefinite period. Thile said, It's always been so natural, but lately it hasn't been quite as natural and we're running the risk of actually having to break up. We would rather leave it for a while, while it's still intact and healthy.

Looking back at Nickel Creek's 18 year experience, Sara Watkins said A lot of the other stuff will be special in the way that anything is special when you realize that it's not going to be around forever...Nothing is going be Nickel Creek except Nickel Creek. I'm not looking for anything to top this. It can't be duplicated in my life.
