The New Yorker magazine describes Gillian Welch's music as at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms. An American singer and songwriter, Gillian Welch is the queen of rock, Americana, and Bluegrass music. She and her musical partner, David Rawlings, are simply the masters of incorporating classical bluegrass, gospel, country and old time music with modern punk rock, jazz, rock n' roll and R&B. Therefore, it is hard to define their music belonging to one particular music genre. It is simply outstanding music which takes us back into the past, while using modern music techniques.
Born Gillian Howard Welch in New York City, she was raised in Los Angeles by her adoptive parents, who were also in entertainment industry. Her biological father was a drummer. It could be said that she was born with music genes. Gillian Welch was introduced to the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie and the legendary Bob Dylan, in her early age. They were her early influences. She became part of her high school band, singing folk songs. While an undergraduate at the University of California, Santa Cruz, she played drums in a psychedelic surf band and played bass guitar in a goth band. After graduation, she went to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts and studied songwriting. It was here that she met Rawlings.
After graduation Gillian Welch moved to Nashville, Tennessee and signed a record deal with Almo Sounds. In 1996, her debut album, Revival, was released. The album was an instantaneous hit amongst her fans and critics. Allmusic praised it as Welch's superb debut and the album would go on to be nominated for a Grammy in 'Best Contemporary Folk Album' category. This early success was enough for Welch and Rawlings to release their second album, Hell Among the Yearlings, in 1998. It, too, like its predecessor won Welch accolades and applause from critics and fans alike. The album was reviewed as having shades of the Stanley Brothers, but with originality of Gillian Welch. Her biggest commercial success however came with O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Welch sang two songs for this Grammy winning platinum album, while collaborating with Alison Krauss and Emmylou Harris.
Her latest album, which was released this year, is called The Harrow & The Harvest. This has been a mega-buster. It reached position no. 20 on the US Billboard Albums Chart and position no. 25 on the UK Albums Chart. The critics have been all praise, suggesting it to be Welch's best work so far, timeless, original, and intimate.
But for those who have closely followed Welch's music career, her best stuff is yet to come. An electrifying stage performer, whose music has been all about subjects like social issues, family, death and drug addiction, in addition to relationship with God, Welch is certainly a unique musician.
