Diamonds & Dirt, Rodney Crowell's fifth studio album has undoubtedly been the highlight in his career. It secured a record for delivering the most number one hits from a country album while also receiving Gold certifications in the United States and Canada. It's Such a Small World, Above and Beyond (The Call of Love), I couldn't Leave You If I Tried, She's Crazy for Leaving, and After All This Time, all swept the number spot on Hot Country Songs while conquering the Canadian charts too. However, before Rodney tasted mainstream success he started off as a songwriter in 1972. Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris were among many whom his songwriting had a great impact on. Emmylou Harris, a Grammy Award winning American singer requested Rodney Crowell to be the rhythm guitarist of her backing band. A few years later he embarked on a new journey while forming his own band called The Cherry Bombs which only lasted for a year.
In 1978, Rodney made a fresh start as he came up with his debut album Ain't Living Long like This, generating singles Elvira, Baby Better Start Turnin' em Down, and (Now and Then There's) A Fool such as I. The album did a fair job but it was the next three albums that officially put him on the map. But What Will the Neighbors Think, Rodney Crowell and Street Language released in 1980, 1981 and 1986 and gave hits such as Ashes by Now, Stars on the Water, Victim or a Fool, Looking for You, When I'm Free Again and Shame on the Moon. The 1980 release secured sixty-forth spot Top Country Albums chart and one hundred and fifty-fifth on Billboard 200 Albums chart. The next year's album landed on number forty-seven and one hundred and five on Top Country Albums chart and Billboard 200 Albums chart respectively. Whereas, Street Language reached number thirty-eight in the US. The year 1988 was the year of golden glory for Rodney Crowell as he delivered the biggest hit of his career; Diamonds & Dirt.
Other albums that complete his discography are; Keys to the Highway, Life is Messy, Let the Picture Paint Itself, Jewel of the South, The Houston Kid, Fate's Right Hand, The Outsider and Sex and Gasoline. These albums have also contributed a lot to his success by producing hits like Many a Long and Lonesome Highway, If Looks could Kill, What Kind of Love, Please Remember Me, My Pat is Present, Now that We are Alone and Earthbound. Of all, Fate's Right Hand, The Houston Kid, and The Outsider are deemed some of his best albums to date by many notable critics. The Houston Kid also featured a collaboration with Johnny Cash which met with a positive response, as the song (I Walk the Line) reached Hot Country Songs charts in 2001. Moreover, in recent years Rodney has been seen producing and songwriting for other musicians. In 2009, he penned a song for a country singer, Wynonna Judd's album; Sing: Chapter 1. This song again proved his caliber as a lyricist as it ended up on the fourth spot on Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. In 2010, he produced Chely Wright's studio album called Lifted Off the Ground. After touring extensively throughout his career he is about to hit the stage in your city.
