Rodney Atkins was born in Knoxville, Tennessee to a nineteen yeard olf mother who put him up for adoption. After spending several years at a home, he was eventually adopted by Margaret Atkins and her husband, Allan Atkins. He grew up in Claiborne County, Tennessee, studying at the Powell Valley High School and began playing guitar at a young age. He went on to study at Tennessee Tech, where he became friends with a number of songwriters and started songwriting.
