Darius Rucker is an African American and he was born in Charleston South Carolina in 1966. His father attended church regularly on Sundays and also played in a local gospel band called The Rolling Stones. Throughout his childhood Rucker saw his family in financial problems. Rucker decided to pursue a career in music while he was still in his late teens. In 1986 while in university he formed the band Hootie & The Blowfish with his friends Dean Felber (bass guitar and backing vocals), Jim Sonefeld (percussions and drums) and Mark Bryan (vocals and lead guitar). Initially Rucker and Bryan Met and they performed band covers at a local place, later on the rest of the members joined. Rucker and his group primarily focus on genres like rock, country rock, alternative rock, R&B and even pop rock.

Rucker has remained the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Hootie & The Blowfish since the start and the band has released five studio albums till date. The first album of Hootie & The Blowfish was Cracked Rear View was released in 1994 and got a superb response from music lovers. This album was at #1 on US and New Zealand charts and was certified Diamond in Canada and 16x Platinum in the US which is quite amazing for a debut band. In the year 1996 came Fairweather Johnson which again was at #1 on US Charts and was certified 3x Platinum in US but failed to be as successful as the previous one. Rucker as a solo artist made his debut in 2002 with the album Back to Then, released by Hidden Beach Records it was at #1 on US Top Heatseekers Charts. Rucker released his second album Learn to Live after a gap of almost six years in 2008 and this was his first album ever in which he experimented with country music. This album was a certified Platinum and charted at #1 on US Country Charts and #5 on US Billboard 200. Charleston, SC 1966 is the latest solo album of Rucker till date and it was released in 2010 by Capitol Nashville Records. This album got Gold certification in the US and again landed on the top slot on US Country Charts and #2 on US Billboard.

Darius Rucker made history in 2009 when he became the first ever African American Artist to win a Country Music Association (MCA) New Artist Award. He is the second African American Artist to win an award from CMA after Charley Pride who in 1971 won the award for "Entertainer of the Year". Five of his singles from his solo albums namely "Don't Think I Don't think About It", "It Won't Be Like This for Long", "Alright", "Come Back Song" and "This" were at #1 US Hot Country Song Charts, the first four of these singles were also certified Gold.
