 The band members played together as part of various bands before the formation of Silversun Pickups.  They were invited to play at different Los Angeles clubs like Spaceland and Sliverlake Lounge. They released an EP called 'Pikul' after performing live for some time and the EP helped them promote their music. Soon they gained recognition for their work. The name of the band is taken from a liquor store. They were previously called A Couple of Couples. The band members state that the name represents a certain state of mind. It is a direct reference to alcohol and how it can influence the mind.
 
The band came into the mainstream music industry through the release of their studio album 'Carnavas'. Two songs titled 'Well Through Out Twinkles' and 'Lazy Eye' took top positions in the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks in 2007. 'Lazy Eye' was so famous that it was included in video games like Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2. The song was also available as a DLC for many other video game titles. They went on tour with Wolfmother, Ok Go and Snow Petrol to support 'Carnavas'. They were one of the highlighted bands at the Coachella Music Festival that took place on the 27^th of April in 2007. A few radio stations dedicated to rock music also invited Silversun Pickups to play concerts. After the release of 'Carnavas' in England, Silversun Pickups went on their first European tour. The album sold more than 435,000 copies and reached position #80 on the Billboard 200.
 
The 10 track collection  titled 'Swoon' was their second full length studio album. It was released in April 2009 and instantly took position #7 on album charts and sold more than 43,000 copies within one week. They released their first single of the album on MTV music and various radio stations.  It was titled 'Panic Switch'. They were nominated for The Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards for this album.
 
The record 'Neck of Woods' released in 2012 took the top position on the iTunes top 100 album chart.  Its success was followed by live performances in various music festivals. They had previously performed at the Sasquatch Music Festival in February before announcing the release of the album via Twitter. Their first single of the album titled 'Bloody Mary' was released on March 25^th and the album was released on the 8^th of May, 2012. They announced a North American Tour on July 24. The tour began in September and included the West coast and western Canada.
 
Silversun Pickups use distortion effects on their guitars and use overlapping symphonies to produce most of their music. Their music is very similar to The Smashing Pumpkins. Their vocalist Brian Aubert is known for his screaming vocal style and he can hit both high and low notes with ease. Their latest album 'Neck of the woods' is a mix of electronic music and effects. Although it still contains the distortion guitar that Silversun Pickups are known for, its rhythm is very different from previous albums. As with all Silversun Pickups compositions, his album has a gloomy and dark feel as well.
