Gov't Mule is a southern rock/jam band formed in 1994 as an Allman Brothers Band side project. Like many jam bands, Gov't Mule does not get much radio airplay but is popular due to constant touring and intense fan loyalty. Many popular rock musicians claim Gov't Mule as their favorite.
History
In 1989, When the Allman Brothers Band reformed in response to the popularity of the Dreams box set, Warren Haynes was added on lead guitar and Allen Woody was added on bass. The two shared a love for '60s power trios. They released their debut CD Gov't Mule in 1995. It was followed by Live From Roseland Ballroom.
In 1997 Haynes and Woody left to concentrate full-time on Gov't Mule. Dose, the studio follow up to their first studio effort, was released in early 1998. They were joined by members of the Allman Brothers. This was released in both a two and four CD version as Live ... With A Little Help From Our Friends.
In 2000, the band released Life Before Insanity to critical praise. Haynes and Abts considered breaking up the band but did stage a concert called "One for Woody" to raise money for his daughter's education. At both the "One for Woody" performance and other shows, Haynes began appearing with the Allman Brothers Band again. Warren came back full time to the band at the beginning of 2001 and has continued splitting his time between the Allmans, Gov't Mule and for a period Phil Lesh.
The next year, Haynes and Abts began to record a tribute CD using Woody's favorite bass players. These sessions resulted in two CDs The Deep End, Volume 1 and The Deep End, Volume 2. Bass contributions to the CDs came from Jack Bruce, John Entwisle, Mike Watt, Les Claypool, Flea, and Chris Squire.
Haynes and Abts used a revolving door of keyboardists and bassists. Keyboardists included Chuck Leavell, Rob Barraco and Friends and Zen Tricksters, Phish's Page McConnell and Danny Louis. Bassists included among others, Dave Schools, Oteil Burbridge, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, George Porter Jr., Greg Rzab and Andy Hess. Louis and Hess were eventually added as permanent members of Gov't Mule.In September 2004, the first CD with Louis and Hess was released. Additional material from those sessions was released in 2005. Gov't Mule continues to tour extensively. On August 22, 2006, the new lineup's second release, titled High and Mighty, was released.
In 1995, their self titled debut was released; in 1997 Haynes and bassist Allen Woody followed their collective muse and Gov't Mule became a full-time band. In 2000, Haynes and Abts performed and recorded with over 30 bass players for the celebrated "Deep End" projects. Danny Louis joined the band on keyboards in 2002, and the following year Andy Hess became the band's permanent bass player. "Sco-Mule," a funky instrumental track from THE DEEP END VOL. 1 in early 2003, featuring jazz guitarist John Scofield, was nominated for a Grammy Award. This marked Haynes' seventh overall Grammy nomination; he accepted an award along with the Allman Brothers Band for an incendiary live in 1995, take on the band's classic "Jessica."
Govt Mule celebrated its 1,000th live show in 2004. The past year has seen the band headline venues across the nation that includes Colorado's famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre and multiple nights. In 2005 Warren Haynes was ranked No. 23 in Rolling Stone's list of all-time top guitarists. And there is plenty more excitement to come. With the release of HIGH & MIGHTY, Gov't Mule will once again hit the road, thrilling its devoted fan base. Opening select dates on Gov't Mule's tour will be artists such as My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and Michael Franti and Spearhead. There is no better place to start than with HIGH & MIGHTY. So, as the band's diehard fans would say, get on the Mule train.
