The football team is also part of the legendary Battle for the Golden Horseshoe, a yearly game against rival football team, the UC Davis. The Cal Poly Mustangs basketball team is also superb in college basketball and had a highly successful year back in 2007 when it was just a win into the national NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Cal Poly Mustangs women's volleyball team is a renowned team and one of the best athletic teams from the California Polytechnic University. This amazing team won two straight Big West Titles and its 2007 win is legendary. In this game, the team won by a 15-1 conference record with an astounding overall record of 23-8. Thus, the women's volleyball team is one of the top teams in the nation.

The men's cross country team is also highly successful since it has ranked amongst the top twenty-five in the entire nation for the past four years. The team has won seven Big West Titles, all straight wins, with the last title won back in 2009. The men's soccer team is also massively successful with the team ranked third in the Big West Conference and also playing in the NCAA Division I tournament. These amazing athletic teams are also part of the Blue Green Rivalry, a series of matches involving sixteen sports and occurring between the Cal Poly Mustangs and the Gauchos. This series is unique because it uses sports to promote sustainability and recycling, a first of its kind in the US and in the world. The men's football team has won an NCAA Division II National Championship as well as played in the Camellia Bowl. Many of the team's players play in the NFL; these include Ramses Barden and Courtney Brown, both of the New York Giants.
