The first season of the Hornets was marked by Kelly Tripucka, who was Charlotte's top scorer in the first two seasons. Littles only served the team till the end of second season and was replaced by Allan Bristow. The Hornets' performance improved between the 1991-95 seasons.

The team made its first winning record in the fifth season at the score 44-38. This earned Hornets its first playoff berth in the franchise's history. In the league's early years in New Orleans, it was coached by Paul Silas, Tim Floyd and Byron Scott. From 2005 until 2011 the team was evolving and struggling for a strong lineup. It earned its first division title under head coach Jeff Bower. NBA purchased the league from Shinn in 2010.
