Chicago Sky
Women's National Basketball Association's one of the upcoming teams is Chicago Sky, based in Chicago Illinois. Chicago Sky started playing league in 2006 in their home court of UIC Pavilion. Chicago Sky unlike most other teams of the region, is not a sister team of Chicago bulls.
This is why the ownership, team colours and home grounds are different from each other. Only thing common between the two is that there is link to Sky's website from the Bulls website. Their uniform is distinct from all other Chicago sister teams.
Chicago sky players wear white with light blue on the side and light blue collars when playing on home ground. Other uniform is Gold collared shirts and light blue with gold on the sides. Dave Cowens was selected as team head coach and manager on 27 May 2005.
In September 2005 team's logo and name was finally debuted at the Adler planetarium. Margret Stender who was the team's CEO and president explained the significance of colours of teams logo and uniform; Yellow and blue colour a deeper meaning she said that A beautiful day in Chicago between the blue sky and bright sunlight to highlight the spectacular skyline.
Many WNBA star player were present on the inauguration ceremony of Chicago Sky, including 2004 WNBA Rookie of the Year Diana Taurasi illuminated the stadium by her presence, Temeka Johnson was also present who was 2005 WNBA Rookie of the Year, 2002 WNBA Rookie of the Year Sue Bird and 2003 WNBA Champion Ruth Riley were also present on the event.
Finally in November of 2005 team held and an expansion draft to build roster of players. Brooke Wyckoff, Bernadette Ngovisa, Elaine Powell and Stacy Dales were amongst the other notable players. The team played their first WNBA season in 2006.After the first season Dave Cowens was replaced by Bo Overton as a new head coach and general manager and head coach.
2006 was not a very good year for Sky but it did give them hopes to draw the top picks in 2007. They ended up with overall of a third pick with Monique Currie on their side. In 2007, Sky's team improved tremendously bringing forth the chances for success. Some of the new entrants in the team In 2007, the Sky would field a vastly improved team.
The core group of players from 2006 along with some new additions (Notably Rookie Armintie Price) helped make the team competitive. The Sky would in the East playoff picture all year long, even holding the #4 seed for part of the season. But Sky finished with a 14-20 record. However, they would only finish 2 games back of the final playoff spot. Guard Armintie Price was named the 2007 WNBA Rookie of the Year after the season.
2008 was a year when sky came under yet another head coach Steven Key and Sylvia Fowles with second overall pick of the WNBA draft. Sky's team is a mix of interesting players including nikki McCray who is a three-time WNBA star & won Olympic gold medals, Stacey Dales an ESPN analyst who returned to the game after two years, Stacey Lovelace who played in five different countries in addition to the WNBA.
Alter was always fond of buying the franchise of the team, it was only in 2004 when he started researching about the possibilities of buying a franchise.
He was inspired by the passion and commitment of the team towards the game. He believed in power of the sports to bring communities closer and teach life lessons. Margaret Stender joined Alter to do her dream job a desire to build something that will inspire young girls to come forward and participate actively in sports.
Stender knew her work as a top marketer for Rand McNally and other such companies and she did her best to bring forth Sky's image. Team outsourced a staff to handle online ticket selling and that is exactly where the new team started its journey to success.
