Jazz music, a name every music lover is familiar with, is one of the widely recognized genres of the world of music. This unique and artistic medium of music balances the traditional elements with new ideas and tunes, thus creating a sound that is liked by listeners of different moods and tastes. The approach to jazz music is largely based on improvisation. However, with continuous experiments in different times, the new sound has incorporated many other musical elements as well.
Also referred to as Jazz and Blues, Jazz music is a proud invention of American musicians. The genre is born and bred in America in the 20th century. The sound was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Being a port city, it served as the melting pot of different cultures. The musicians here were exposed to a variety of music that they used to learn from different traders coming here for business purposes.
The Jazz that we hear today is mainly a combination of European classical music of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, folk music from West Africa, characteristic of the blues, rhythms of Ragtime and songs from Southern America. This form of music spread from New Orleans to many North American areas like Saint Louis, Chicago and Kansas City; thus the cultural diversity kept adding more depth into its sound.
For a musician and thoughtful music listener, Jazz is about expressing one's feelings and thoughts through improvisation. For a casual music follower, Jazz is all about wonderful melody and harmonious experience. And for a historian, Jazz is among the greatest cultural achievements of America. Whatever it is, the sound of Jazz is completely spell-bounding.
America is credited for taking the sound of Jazz to the whole world and making it popular across the region, race and boundary. Talking about Jazz and not mentioning Louis Armstrong would be little unfair. Hailed as the father of modern jazz improvisation, this trumpet player from New Orleans led several Jazz groups in the 1920's and 30's and showcased a personal style of improvisation.
Today, Jazz music is considered a timeless phenomenon that is constantly rising in popularity despite the heavy commercial support to Pop, Rock and Rap. While music schools and specialized training centers hire veteran jazz artists to transfer this art to future generations, concertgoers enjoy a wide variety of Jazz related events and festivals throughout the year.
Today, independent singers, Jazz specific labels and bands, Jazz symphony groups, musicians and instrumentalist fall under the spectrum from the Jazz umbrella. The performances are held both as individual events and in large festivals dedicated to only Jazz music. These artists do not get as much airtime as contemporary music acts, but they still enjoy a massive fan base all over the world.
Over the years, the world has witnessed some of the best jazz performers in and outside United States. Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus played a great role in the development of this sound.
The world of Jazz is also full of great talent of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Nat Cole, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Dinah Washington, Harry Connick Jr., Shirley Horn, MalePerry Cuomo and other popular artists. They have ruled the hearts of millions on the basis of their creativity and impeccable talent.
