Born in China, Lang was exposed to the music of Franz Liszt at the age of two. That inspired him to learn piano and by the age of five, Lang won the Shenyang Piano Competition. It motivated him to further polish his talent and he entered Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing when he was nine. Winning a native music contest in 1993, he emerged as a young star in local music scene.

In 1994 he stood first at the International Competition for Young Pianists, held in Germany. By the time Lang was thirteen, he played famous compositions by Chopin at Beijing Concert Hall and won International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians, organized in Japan.  He was featured as a solo musician at the opening ceremony of China National Symphony when he was fourteen years old.

Representing his country in major parts of the world, Lang became the first Chinese to play with the prestigious orchestras like Vienna Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic. Moving to US to hone his skills to the professional level, Lang became student of the great musician Gary Graffman. Lang made successful debuts at Carnegie Hall and Philadelphia Orchestra in 2001 and in 2003 played at BBC Proms with Leonard Slatkin.
