The music they produce is known to be utterly hardcore and uplifting. The band has played in festivals and stages all over the world. The band was originally formed back in 1991 when Derrick Moss and Lumar Leblanc who were members of the iconic 'Young Olympia Brass Band' decided to make their own music after being inspired of hearing pop sounds on the radio. But they intended to fulfill their goal without disrespecting the decade's old brass and marching bands tradition. Both the original founders of the band were bold enough to try contemporary styles of music.
It was not long before the band built up a loyal fan following accruing to their exciting and contagious sounds. They continued winning over the heart of the masses as they rocked some of the local's favorite venues. The ensemble continued to play without a proper name until Cyril Neville form the famous Neville Brothers first called them "Soul Rebels", a good name considering the innovation they brought to the cherished musical heritage of their locality. Ever since their inception, the band has thrived on building their career around diverse and thrilling live shows that harness the power of beating drums and horns which in turn create a party like ambience. The Soul Rebel have been performing at their local favorite venue, Le Bon Temps Roule since the band first began and they still rock the clubs' stage on a weekly basis whenever they are not on tour.
In their extensive touring of the U.S they have shared the stage with renowned hip-hop, pop and jazz artists like The Roots, Arcade Fire, Chuck Brown, The Gap Band, James Brown, Cee Lo Green, Kanye West and many others. The Soul Rebels continues to scale the globe; on average they perform about 250 concerts in a year. They have brought the party to stages as far as Europe and South Africa, playing some of the world most premier music events including Antibes Jazz Festival, Bonaroo, Montreal jazz Festival and the Jazz and Heritage Festival of their hometown. After the Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans the band sprung into action and played many charity gigs. The most notable charity event was an after party special at of the 'Make it Right Foundation' which was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres at which the ensemble shared the stage with Snoop Dogg and Kanye West.
The Band has released a total of seven albums to date. However, their first ever international album release came in 2012. This album titled, "Unlock Your Mind" was well received with tons of splendid reviews universally. This album was a testament to the power of horns and the creativity of the Rebel's music. The Soul Rebels were ranked in the 'Top Ten Moments' of the four-day music festival named Bonarro 2012 by the Paste Magazine. Other Legendary bands to join in this rank comprise of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beach Boys, Phish, Radio Head, The Roots and D'Angelo. The band has won the Big Easy Award thrice and in 2012 they won the award for 'Best Brass Band Of The Year' at the Best Of the Beat Awards.
