Undoubtedly one of the most successful jazz musicians, Patrick Bruce Metheny was born on 12 August, 1954 in Lee's Summit Missouri. Metheny took his high school education from Lee's Summit High school and after that took admission in University of Miami for high education. But his stay at the University of Miami was short lived as he dropped out of university and started working as a teacher. In 1975, Metheny entered the music industry as he recorded Bright Size Life with the Gary Burton's Band.
Metheny recorded his next number Watercolors, two years later in 1977, featuring Lyle Mays piano skills for the first time. It wasn't the first time for Lyle Mays to collaborate with Metheny, as he was Metheny's most recurrent collaborator. Later the duo, gave a name to their partnership as Pat formed Pat Metheny Group and released a self-titled debut album that feature songs that were written both by Metheny and Mays.
Pat Metheny Group officially came into existence in 1977, which comprised of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, the group released its self titled debut album the following year in which the bass was played by Mark Egan and the drumming was executed by Dan Gottlieb. The Group released its second album, American Garage in 1980, which was more successful that their previous album. It was their first hit album that fetched them the #1 ranking on the Billboard Jazz Chart. The album also contained that is also known as the signature track of the Group called (Cross the) Heartland.
The current line-up of the Group is comprised of the founder and leader of the Group; Pat Metheny on guitars, Piano is played by none other than Lyle Mays while Steve Rodby plays double bass and electric bass and the trumpet is played by Cuong Vu. Other temporary members that are inducted in the Group's tours frequently include, Mark Ledford, David Blamires, Armando Mar?al, Pedro Aznar and Richard Bona.
According to Pat Metheny himself, his biggest early inspiration as a guitarist was Wes Montgomery. However his way of playing guitar also indicates the influence he has taken by Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, Joe Pass and many other classical figures. With the passage of time, Metheny's guitar playing for different genres have evolved as well, he is known of playing notables from a rock guitarist like Eddie Van Halen to Leo Kottke. Metheny's music is also highly influenced by Brazilian and European jazz music.
He has performed several tours along with local jazz figures of both Europe and Brazil. Metheny also cited that he is a fan of pop icons, The Beatles and James Taylor and in fact he also named his track "James" after James Taylor. Metheny has always been experimental with his music; although his music never lost the touch of jazz but it also included several guitar tones from other rock counterparts.
As of today Pat Metheny have bring home a total of 17 Grammy Awards. Out of these, he won ten consecutive Grammy's as a part of Pat Metheny Group.
