One of the most successful multi-genre bands of the twentieth century, Earth, Wind & Fire has been a part of the music landscape for nearly five decades. Predominantly considered a funk and R&B band, EWF has explored a variety of genres, including soul, jazz, disco, Latin, African and gospel music.

Over the course of their five decade career, Earth, Wind & Fire has amassed a huge discography and received numerous awards and accolades. The band was founded in Chicago by Maurice White in 1969. White had previously been the session drummer for Chess Records. Getting together with Wade Flemons and Don Whitehead, Maurice signed a record deal with Capitol and formed the band Salty Peppers. That band was only marginally successful. Maurice kept adding members to the group and changed the band name to Earth, Wind & Fire in 1969. 

EWF has changed their lineup multiple times over the course of their history. Maurice White has remained at the helm throughout as the songwriting genius, drummer, percussionist and occasional vocalist. Verdine White has been a long-time member too, playing as the bassist, and Philip Bailey is the band's lead singer. Bailey' s crooning talent at jazz numbers and skill at singing funk songs added an extra dimension to the band's music. EWF's fairly consistent lineup since 2008 also includes Ralph Johnson, B. David Whitworth and Greg Moore, among others.

In 1971, the band released their self-titled debut album. The album climbed the R&B Albums chart, landing at number twenty-four. It spawned some of the band's top hits, including "September", "Boogie Wonderland" and "Let's Groove". With each subsequent album the band kept climbing higher and higher on the charts.

Eventually they made their way to the top of the list with the highly successful album, That's The Way Of The World, which peaked at number one on both the R&B Albums chart and the Billboard 200. Their following album Gratitude also peaked at number one on both charts. In 1977, EWF issued another hit album, All 'n All. The album earned for the group a Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal".

Reaching the height of their popularity during the 70's with one hit album after the next, EWF have continued the tradition of producing great music. The band has remained a fixture on Billboard's R&B Albums chart throughout their career.  Four of their tracks have also earned the Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal". In 2013, the talented group released their acclaimed album Now, Then & Forever, which reached the number eleven spot on the Billboard 200. This album was the band's first in five years.
