Hailing from Philadelphia, Stanley Clarke found interest in music when he was handed the acoustic bass to play in school during a music class. During his time at Roxborough High School, Stanley Clarke played with various rock and R&B bands to gain experience and indulge himself in music that he loved. After high school he went to Philadelphia Musical Academy to further educate himself in music. After completing his time at the Academy he moved to New York to test new waters. After working for various artists Stanley Clarke joined a jazz fusion group called "Return to Forever".
