The Dallas Mavericks
The professional basketball team of the National Basketball Association based in Dallas, Texas, is known as the Dallas Mavericks. Owned by the often controversial Internet billionaire, Mark Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks are one of the hottest teams in the NBA and are also known as simply the 'Mavs'.

Winners of two division titles and one conference championship, the Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980 and were admitted into the NBA in 1980-1981. Soon after, they became a competitive franchise. They paid a $12 million entry fee to join the NBA. The team's name came from the 1957-1962 TV western Maverick, as James Garner played the namesake character, and was one of the original team owners. Before welcoming the Mavericks, Dallas had been home to the Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association from 1967-68 to 1972-73. On March 26, 1973, the Chaparrals played the Carolina Cougars in the last ABA game played at Dallas Memorial Auditorium-the paid attendance was 134. The next season the Chaparrals became the San Antonio Spurs, and for the next seven years Dallas was without a professional basketball franchise.

The Mavericks opened the 1980-81 season in the posh new $27 million Reunion Arena. The opening-night lineup included Abdul Jeelani, Jerome Whitehead, Tom LaGarde, Geoff Huston, and Winford Boynes. Dallas upset the San Antonio Spurs, 103-92, in the team's debut contest. Jeelani scored the first points in franchise history; Boynes led Dallas with 21 points, while LaGarde added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Brad Davis, who played for the Anchorage Northern Knights of the Continental Basketball Association, was tracked down and signed by the Mavs in December. At the time, there was absolutely no reason to expect that Davis would be any better than the expansion-level talent the Mavs had. But he started the Mavs' final 26 games, led the team in assists, and his career soared. He spent the next twelve years with the Mavericks, and eventually his #15 jersey was retired.

Due to the expansion draft, 1981, The Mavs selected three players, including 6'6" forward Mark Aguirre with the first pick, 6'6" guard Rolando Blackman 9th, and 6'7" forward Jay Vincent 24th, which are now a vital part of the team. Whereas, it was Jay Vincent who made the biggest difference for the Mavs in their second season, leading the team in scoring with 21.4 points per game and earning NBA All-Rookie Team honors. The Mavericks improved to 28-54, getting out of the Midwest Division cellar as they finished above the Utah Jazz. However, the team had a few ups and downs, and their first losing season since 1982-83, was the 1988-89 season when James Donaldson went down with a ruptured patella tendon on March 10, 1989 and missed the rest of the season as a result. The team pulled itself back together and returned to the playoffs in 1989-90 with a 47-35 record, but it was another season of off-court chaos.

In short, the teams total play-off appearances are 14 in number, The Dallas Mavericks have played a total of 28 NBA Seasons, and so far, their best season has been the 2006-07 season, when they finished the season off with a record of 67-15. Whereas, the team's worst season was 1992-93 season. The Mavericks logo consists of a half-moon and a half-horse placed on a shield. The Texas star is seen at the bottom of the logo. The team has a lot of star power with top players like Dirk Nowitski, Jerry Stackhouse, Jason Terry and Josh Howard. Other great players include Steve Nash, Michael Finley, Jason Kidd, etc. Their current uniforms consist of midnight blue with silver and white trim on the road uniforms, while the home uniforms consist of white with midnight blue, silver and black trim. They are designed by rapper Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, and feature "Mavs" in the front side of the jersey with blue trim. The initial road uniform colors were royal blue, green and white trim. However, during their expansion season of 1980-81, the colors got changed to green with royal blue and white trim, which was their uniform standard during the 1980's. In the 1990's they reverted back to their first season road uniform scheme, with minor alterations in the "Dallas" script. For the first 21 years of the franchise their home uniform colors were white with royal blue and green trim, with a few alterations to the script "Mavericks" during the 1990's.
