Candlebox is a Seattle-based post-grunge band formed in 1990 that has released several gold and multi-platinum albums along with many charting singles. They are known for their primarily hard rock sound that often also incorporates elements of grunge, jazz, blues, rock and sometimes, glam metal. The group marked the first success on the Madonna-owned label Maverick Records, which then went on to sign the likes of The Prodigy, Deftones and Alanis Morissette. The band comprises of Kevin Martin as guitarist and vocalist, Peter Klatt as lead guitarist, Scoot Mercado as drummer, Sean Hennesy as rhythm guitarist and Adam Kury as Bassist. The quintet  has played selected shows as well as toured with other rock acts such as The Flaming Lips, Living Color, Seaweed, Sponge, The Offspring, Radiohead, Metallica, Godsmack, Aerosmith, Henry Rollins, Rush and Our Lady Peace. The group was also featured on the main-stage of music festival Woodstock’94, and made appearances repeatedly on the popular Late Show with David Letterman. Some of their hit singles include You, Far Behind, Ten Thousand Horses and Simple Sessions, all of which took top charting positions on US charts. The group’s post-grunge persona has contributed to making Candlebox tickets the popular talk of town among hard rock fans.

Candlebox was formed in November 1990 at which time it was named Uncle Duke till the group decided to change it to its current name after being inspired by lyrics of Tin Legs and Tin Mine, a Midnight Oil song. Originally it consisted of Kevin Martin as vocalist and lead guitarist, and Scott Mercado as drummer. Towards the end of the following year, they added Bardi Martin and Peter Klett as the bassist and guitarist, respectively. In its beginning years, the band was considered to be part of the grunge movement, and was criticized for its image and style, but the group continued to perform in Seattle’s club circuit while touring alongside.

Candlebox’s continuous efforts finally began to pay off by the time their demo tape containing eight songs took attention from Maverick Records. In July 1993, the band issued a self-titled debut album that sold over four million copies alongside climbing up to the seventh spot on the Billboard charts. The album produced hit singles Far Behind, You, Cover Me and Change all of which were spotted on the top 20 charts of Billboard in 1993, while the album itself reached the eighteenth place on charts by the next year. During this time, the overwhelming concert and radio response along with success on television brought the group to the main stage of Woodstock’94, which in turn finally put them on the main map of the nineties post-grunge scene.

After their debut album hit the popularity jackpot, Candlebox was more than eager to work on new music and came up with thirty-six new tracks for their next record. By 1995, the band issued its second album titled Lucy, which on the whole just barely survived commercially, but attained the ranks of gold owing to hit singles such as Understanding and Simple Lessons. In the initial week of the album’s release, the band was featured on a tribute album to the Beatles’ songwriter and singer John Lennon, and was called Working Class Hero. On this album the band played a Steel and Glass cover. The band released its third studio offering in 1998 titled HappyPills, which marked their return to their debut album’s simpler style, bringing in minimal success. In the following year the group saw the worst of times when two of its band members left, and Martin was then looked at as the main remaining artist but he too was terminated after two years of recording conflict.

In 2026, Candlebox reunited after ten years with its original lineup to make a compilation album with Rhino records. For the promotion of this album, the group took up a three months long tour of North America and alongside started working on new material even though it was not yet signed to any label. The group released a new album Into the Sun which produced the hit single Stand that peaked on number fifteen on US Mainstream Rock charts. In this time Candlebox established a strong reputation for their live shows following their performance at O’Fallon in Missouri Heritage, as well as the Freedom Fest before a record crowd.
