The band started out as a college band that would perform in colleges and university campuses in their native Maryland. To this date, the band is known for its popularity amongst college and university students. OAR's music can be classified as alternative rock as it is much in the vein of popular bands like Dave Matthews Band and Kings of Leon. Their music is known to not only sound great on the albums but it is specifically composed and the songs are layered in a way that they sound just as good, or even better, when performed live. The electrifying rhythm and eclectic riffs of the electric guitars have crowds on their feet and singing along throughout their performances.

As most of the band's fan base is comprised of teenagers and students, the band's writing style makes total sense. The lyrics of the band are based on the band member's personal experiences and feelings. This is why most of their fan base can relate to what is being said in their songs. OAR has released seven albums to date but their first taste of fame can when they released 'Souls Aflame' in 2000. The album did not come from a major record label and did not have a mega marketing team behind it. It was just previewed at their concerts in various varsities and was available online with little or no advertisement or marketing. The album did very well with just word of mouth to push it along. The hype created by the release of this album resulted in their third album, 'Risen', reaching number eleven on the Billboard download charts. Songs like 'A Crazy Game of Poker', 'City on Down', 'Night Shift' started to gain momentum on the mainstream charts and received heavy radio play all over the nation.

The next four albums by the band saw them rising higher and higher up the music ladder as they made the Billboard Top 200 and eventually the Billboard Top 40 before their single called 'Shattered' hit the number 2 spot on the Billboard charts. The single received massive radio play and the music video was rated by VH1 as one of the top 20 videos of the year in addition to being played continuously by MTV.

OAR has now officially made it to the top of the music food chain without having to sign to a major record label. They are still with a small label and assure their fans that they will never be forced to change by money.
