Wiz Tickets

The Wiz is a splendid American musical with music by Charlie Smalls, Luther Vandross, Harold Wheeler and Timothy Graphenreed. Its lyrics are written by Zachary Walzer, Luther Vandross and Zachary Walzer. Its book is the work of William F. Brown and it is based upon one of the most popular books of all time, L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, on which several more musicals have also been made. The very first production of this musical took place in 1974 in Baltimore. Since then, it has seen many performances with many people watching it live on stage through The Wiz tickets.
 
The Wiz is an award winning musical that has won many Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards. It has seen productions all over the world, in countries such as the Netherlands in Europe. It is known fully as The Wiz: The Super Soul Musical 'Wonderful Wizard of Oz' and is a musical told in terms of the African American cluture in the US. Its very first performances took place at Baltimore's Morris A. Mechanic Theatre in 1974 and continued until 1975 when the show got a new cast and moved to the Majestic Theatre, on Broadway.
 
The Wiz's first production had a cast in which Dorothy was played by Renee Harris, the Scarecrow was played by Charles Valentino, the Tin Man was played by Ben Harney, the Cowardly Lion was played by Ken Prymus and the Queen of the Field Mice was played by Butterfly McQueen. In 1975, it opened on Broadway with a new cast in which only Ben Harney had a role, albeit a different one, with Stephanie Mills playing Dorothy, Tiger Hayned playing the Tin Man, Hinton Battle playing the Scarecrow, Dee Dee Bridgewater playing Glinda and Ted Ross playing the Lion. The first series of shows took place at the Majestic Theatre and then at The Broadway Theatre.
 
The original Broadway run of The Wiz took place for four long years and saw nearly seventeen hundred performances. The musical was massively popular and led to much fame for the musical and its cast. It was a breakthrough on Broadway itself as a musical featuring an all black cast and a large budget. It laid the foundations for latter musicals like Dreamgirls, Bubbling Brown Sugar and Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies. In 1976, a US tour of the musical took place with a number of new actors. In 1978, a production was staged at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles where Ren Woods played Dorothy.
 
In 1984, The Wiz saw a revival run on Broadway under director Geoffrey Holder and with a cast lead by Stephanie Mills playing Dorothy. This time, the musical was performed at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The same year, the Lyric Hammersmith on London's West End played host to the musical for several months. In 1996, a US National tour of this fabulous musical took place with Dorothy played by Tasha Scott. It continued on to 1997. 
 
In 2006, after many years, The Wiz was produced at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse where it ran for several months and received favorable reviews. This production saw a revised version of music by the original composer, Harold Wheeler. It was directed by Des McAnuff.
