The NHL had no objection to them continuing to wear these colors. Apart from this debate over the colors they could wear, the Penguins had to battle on the ice. They commenced the 1980s with defenseman Randy Carlyle. They also had their best scorers with them, Paul Gardner and Mike Bullard. However, the team still looked slim without other players to support these greats.
Pittsburgh chose Quebec Major Junior Hockey League superstar Mario Lemieux in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. His selection proved to be just right, as he performed well for the team straight away. While the team looked very offensive, critics believed that Lemieux neglected his defensive responsibilities. 1984 to 2004 is known as the Mario Lemieux era.
The 2004-05 NHL season was cancelled because of the NHL lockout. This led to many Penguins signing with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. This is the Penguin's American Hockey League affiliate. The more skilled players in the side, such as Aleksey Morozov and Milan Kraft, went to play in the elite European leagues. However, in 2005, the team began its rebuilding progress.
After the Penguins season ended, the team voted for Sidney Crosby to be named as the new team Captain. Crosby became the youngest full team captain in NHL history. He was just 19 years old.
On March 13th, 2007, an announcement had been made. This was a joint announcement made by a group of important people. It included Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, and Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins ownership group. They collectoively announced that there was an agreement arrived at among the parties. This included a new state-of-the-art multi-purpose arena to be constructed. This will allow the Penguins to stay in Pittsburgh for additional thirty years. Once this announcement was made, the Lemieux ownership group said that it was not interested in sekking the team.
