Basketball’s two major events are played under the banners of the NCAA and the professional league the NBA. Basketball as a sport takes its root from college level. James Naismith, a physical education instructor was given the task of coming up with a new sport. The idea was to use that sport to increase the interest of students in winter physical education classes. Naismith put two baskets at opposite corners of a court and used a soccer ball to come with basketball.
That was the year 1891 and slowly but surely the sport began to attract the attention of the masses. A lot of educational institutions got in on the act and began to play the sport. By the time 1930’s came around the sport had momentum on its side and the management behind the scenes used it to great effect to take it further than it had ever gone before. The National Invitational Tournament began proceedings in 1938 as the first major basketball competition. The NCAA burst onto the scene a year later and has gone on to crown the national champion since then.
The popularity of the sport called for a professional league to be set up and that arrived in 1946 in the form of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL). The two leagues competed for a few years before merging together to create a single entity named the National Basketball Association in the year 1949.
The formation of a single professional structure played a big part in making basketball popular. The standard of play increased dramatically as did the number of teams. The NBA began its first major expansion phase that lasted for seven years between 1961 and 1968. Teams like the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 7ers, Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls upped the ante and gave fans some of the most pulsating basketball action ever seen on the court. These teams and the players that helped them establish these legacies have turned the sport into how popular it is today.
Basketball as a sport is among the most watched in the U.S. It has a devoted fan following that has stayed loyal to the sport and have played a huge part in making it such a big success. It is these very supporters who splash their money on Basketball tickets to support their teams and that will certainly remain the case for a long time to come yet.
