Los Tigres Del Norte's lineup features many amazing artists. This includes director, accordion player and lead vocalist Jorge Hernandez; bassist and vocalist Hernan Hernandez; accordion, saxophone and bajo sexto player Eduardo Hernandez; bajo sexto player and vocalist Luis Hernandez; and drummer Oscar Lara. The Hernandez family, made up of brothers and cousins, has been playing together and has gone on to perform on stages all around Mexico and in the US.

Los Tigres Del Norte was founded by Jorge Hernandez who, with his cousins and brothers, began recording norteno music after moving to California in the late sixties. At the start of their career, all members of the band were teenagers and were sponsored by local record label Disco Fama and its owner, Art Walker. They soon became a local hit and began performing in other cities.

It was in 1971 that the band really took off, after Art Walker and Jorge Hernandez heard a mariachi singer in Los Angeles perform a song about two drug smugglers, a woman and a man. The woman shoots the man and runs away with the money. The song really resonated with the two, who gained permission to record it.

In 1974, they released the album Contrabando Y Traicion, translated to Contraband and Betrayal in English. The song was a massive hit in the US and Mexico, inspiring a number of movies and kicking off what is regarded as one of the most phenomenal careers in Spanish music.

The band's norteno style originated along the Texas border with Mexico and the band are famous for popularizing it. They combined it with waltzes, rock rhythms, bolero, cumbia and other styles, making it more main stream. The band's songs have been able to cover real life in a manner that resonates with people in the US and South America. Most of their songs cover stories of survival, life, love and narcotics.

Overall, Los Tigres have sold thirty two million albums worldwide. They have also won five Latin Grammy Awards in various music categories. In 2007, the band was honored with the prestigious BMI Icon Award at the fourteenth BMI Latin Awards. They were honored in the ceremony as having a 'unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers' and received an all-star musical tribute. They became part of a handful of iconic Latin artists to receive the award and joined a list which includes the likes of Carlos Santana and Juan Luis Guerra.

In 2009, the band played a record breaking twelve hour long concert at Guadalupe in Nuevo Leon in Mexico. They have also gone on to perform for the United States Armed Forces personnel stationed in South Korea and Japan. In 2013, they played at the National Mall in Washington DC as part of an immigration rally, introduced by Nancy Pelosi, the then minority leader.
