Auerbach survived his first few years performing gigs at small bars in Akron and soon met up with Carnay to record their demo tapes. The band’s first break came when they signed with the indie record label company named Alive which was based in Los Angeles. Their initial album ‘The Big Up’ surfaced in 2002 and it was recorded in Carney’s basement using just an 8-track tape recorder. The album covered songs by blue music legends including Muddy Waters, R.L Burnside and Jr. Kimbrough. The album’s single "I'll Be Your Man" was used as a theme song in the HBO series ‘Hung’. The pair released their first live video album soon, before playing at the Lollapalooza Music Festival. This album was recorded live in 2005 at the Metro Theatre located in Sydney, Australia. Around this time Black Keys was now opening for iconic music bands like Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Sleater-Kinney and Beck. The band released a total of seven albums to date and their album "Attack and Release" ranked at number 14 on the Billboard 200.
 
More recently their breakthrough single ‘Tighten Up’ from the sixth album "Brothers" was preceded as the albums leading song and was not only certified Gold but was also the first one to reach the Billboard 100 and later certified Double Platinum in Canada. The same hit single also earned them an MTV Video Music Award for its video. As far as the Grammy Awards are concerned, the band managed to clench three out of five nominations, which they earned in 2011. "El Camino" their most recent record proved a wide-reaching hit. It is considered by many publications including Time Magazine and Rolling Stone as among the best albums of the year 2011. The album was certified Platinum in three countries including the US and UK, whereas it was also certified Double Platinum in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The album also managed to produce the thrilling and worldwide chart topping single ‘Lonely Boy’. During the same year the group headlined in numerous music festivals including Coachella, Catapala Music Festival and Osheaga. Through 2011, the group had managed to sell around two million records in the United States.
