Spoon
Spoon is an American indie rock band from Austin, Texas. The name Spoon was chosen to honor the 1970s German avant-garde band Can, whose hit song Spoon was the theme song to the movie Das Messer. The band is led by Britt Daniel, who handles vocals and plays guitar; Jim Eno on drums; Rob Pope with bass and Eric Harvey displaying his artistic notions through keyboard, guitar, percussion and backing vocals. Spoon's recording debut came with the vinyl release in May of 1994 of The Nefarious EP. Spoon is currently a long-distance band, as Daniel has lived in Portland, Oregon since early 2006.
The band was formed in late 1993 by lead singer/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno during a party on Kimbolton Avenue. The original lineup included Greg Wilson on guitar and Andy McGuire on bass. Spoon have been together over a decade, with one of the most unusual trajectories that any band could posses in recent memory-and one of the best and most unique songwriters in the world.
In 1995, the band signed with Matador Records, and in 1996 released its full-length debut, Telephono. The 1997 EP Soft Effects, also on Matador, exemplifies Spoon's early sound.
Spoon signed with Elektra Records in 1998, but the contract was dropped soon after the band released A Series of Sneaks. In response to being dropped, Spoon released a two-song EP titled The Agony of Laffitte, referring to Elektra A&R man Ron Laffitte. Spoon later signed with Merge Records in the USA, which released the band's Love Ways EP in 2000.Girls Can Tell, released in 2001, sold more copies than both their previous releases combined. Kill the Moonlight accomplished the same feat a year later.Their next album, Gimme Fiction, was released on May 10, 2005 on Merge Records. It debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 160,000 copies. They have appeared on many late night talk shows, such as The Late Show With David Letterman, The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, and Last Call with Carson Daly, as well as the PBS show Austin City Limits. They were also musical guests on Saturday Night Live on October 6, 2007, performing The Underdog and You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb.
Their most recent album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was released July 10, 2007, debuting at number 10 on the Billboard 200.With a history of stellar, no-filler records, Spoon has somehow topped themselves with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, a consistently thrilling album recorded throughout 2006 in Austin by the band and Mike McCarthy with an exception of The Underdog, which was recorded in Los Angeles with Jon Brion. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga starts with Don't Make Me a Target, a song that builds on Spoon's familiar minimal rhythmic piano/guitar vamp popularized on earlier Spoon hits like Small Stakes or The Way We Get By. The album quickly moves into uncharted territory with the atmospheric The Ghost of You Lingers and moves through several different stylistic changes from the explosive, You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb to the wall-of-sound horns of The Underdog, with no intention of pun. The Britt Daniel originals on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga comprise possibly his most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001's Girls Can Tell.
It's worth pointing out that Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is comprised of ten songs with the most admired ones are Loaded, Fulfillingness' First Finale, Back in Black, The Queen Is Dead, The Charm of the Highway Strip, Nebraska, Nashville Skyline, Heroes, Unknown Pleasures, The Violent Femmes, The Woods, Sticky Fingers. Spoon has made a laudable effort which has bestowed them with fame and commendable respect. But considering their efforts it is not just the end, rather it's just the start which has an enlightened end anxiously hanging around for them.
