Rancid is a name of one of the famous American punk rock band, which had been formed in the year of 1991 in the town of Albany, by Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong.

Rancid had placed Armstrong on guitar and vocals, Freeman on the post of bass and vocals, Lars Frederiksen was appointed on guitar and vocals, and Branden Steineckert on drums. The band was originally planned out by a trio like Armstrong, Freeman, and former drummer Brett Reed.

Brett had left the band in the year of 2006 and he was replaced by Branden Steineckert. Frederiksen had joined the band in the year of 1993, at a time when the band was searching for a second guitar player.

Rancid has accomplished the task of releasing six studio albums, one split, one compilation, two EPs, a series of live bootlegs, till date.

The band has been featured on countless compilations as well. The band had really been noticed and reached to the height of glory, with their second album in 1994; it was named Let's Go.

Just after an year, Rancid had released their very successful album titled And Out Come the Wolves. The album had kept their best-known hits Roots Radicals, Ruby Soho and Time Bomb, and it had got the gold and platinum certificates by the RIAA.

The latest studio album, titled Indestructible was released in 2003. The band has continuous on work to release their next album in the early of 2009. Rancid is also credited for reviving mainstream popular interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid 1990s.

On considering the history of the Rancid, it comes to our notice, that Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman had been playing colleagues in the seminal ska punk band named Operation Ivy from 1987-1989.

At the time of its bereak up, they decided to form their own band and started another ska punk band called Downfall, which only lasted a few months. After their initial failure, they had started another hardcore punk group called Generator, which had only lasted for a short time..

They had not been frustrated by their earlier flops and made even two of other bands. Later, in the year of 1991 Tim and Matt had decided to try starting another band. They recruited drummer Brett Reed and the historical band named Rancid, was formed.

Rancid had their first recording of the EP in the year of 1992. Shortly after releasing this, the band had been signed under the Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz's label, named Epitaph Records. Rancid would release their self titled debut album for Epitaph in 1993.

Frederiksen had been playing with the band in the year of 1994, titled Lets Go. That year their label-mates, The Offspring, experienced a huge success with their album Smash.

The Offspring took Rancid on tour with them, and helped Let's Go make it to #97 on Billboard's Heatseekers and Billboard 200 charts, respectively. The success of the album and the band had pursued by several major labels, including Madonna's Maverick Records.
