KC and the Sunshine is a disco/funk music group belonging to Florida. The group was formed in 1973 by the record store employee, Harry Wayne Casey, short version being "KC". Initially, the band was given the titled of KC & the Sunshine Junkanoo Band. The band released the first few singles in the initial two years which were Sound Your Funky Horn and Blow Your Whistle, which received positive response and made it to several US charts as well. However, their single from 1974 titled 'Queen of Clubs' made it to number seven spot in UK, after which they embarked on their very first tour in 1975. KC still recalls that when he formed KC and the Sunshine band, he had that passion in heart to create music that will soothe people's troubled minds and for a moment make them forget all their worries. The band's music has been taken to a almost all of the major sporting events, including Word Series, Super Bowl, The NBA, Conference Championships, The Kentucky Derby, The World Cup, Holiday Parade and the Indianapolis 500. The band's second studio album brought it its breakthrough success. As "KC and the Sunshine Band" album was certified triple Platinum, it became their first major hit within the United States. The song 'Get Down Tonight' made it to Billboard Hot 100 in the August of the same year. KC and the Sunshine's single That's the Way (I Like It) made it to number one spot by November of 1975. It was also included in the Dance Dance Revolution later on. The band also did very well in the Grammy Awards of 1976. The album "Part 3" featured two hit singles, Keep It Comin' Love and I'm Your Boogie Man Shake Your Booty. In the start of 80s, the band started to experiment a lot, trying new genres and switching labels, until they settled to Epic Records right after their previous label went bankrupt.

KC and the Sunshine band topped the charts once again with their records 'Space Cadet' and 'The Painter'. The albums brought them immense success and increased their fan base a great deal. The track from the same years, Give It Up that came from the album "All in a Night's Work" brought them back to the UK scene with a blast. Two years later the song made it to Top 40 list within the United States as well. With this, Casey decided to retire in 1985.

KC and the Sunshine band made a comeback with the revival of disco music during 1991. Casey once again returned to the music scene with a whole new lineup. He signed the band to Rhino Records, and through it they have released a number of compilation albums. Some new material was recorded as well. In 1993 came out the album titled "Oh Yeah!" breaking the ten year long hiatus. In 2000, the rhythm guitarist of the band Jerome Smith died in an accident. A brief comeback by the band was made the next year with the release of the album named "I'll Be There For You". In April of 2009, Casey sang his famous Get Down Tonight at American Idol.
