Hiss Golden Messenger is a duo consisting of singer-songwriter MC Taylor and multi-instrumentalist Scott Hirsch. This folk music duo hails from North Carolina. Known for the fusion of multiple genres in their music and the stirring lyrical content of their songs, the band is modestly famous in the music industry.
Band history
Born and raised in Southern California, Taylor grew up in a musical household. Inspired by his musician father, he chose to play guitar at an early age. His first music experience was playing with the hardcore punk band Ex-Ignota where Scott Hirsch was also a member. Soon he began writing his own songs and moved to San Francisco where he led the indie-rock band, The Court & Spark. The band was credited with four critically acclaimed albums before it decided to break up in 2007.
Following the breakup, the duo decided to operate under a new name, Hiss Golden Messenger. They moved to North Carolina where the pair recorded music; however, Taylor performed solo on live shows. Through their own Heaven and Earth Magic Recording Company, the folk music duo released their first two albums, Country Hai East Cotton and Root Work. The former featured tracks such as "Hey Diamond" and "Instant Light".
Bad Debt and other albums
In 2010, the duo signed a record deal with a UK label, Black Maps. The label distributed the duo's mini-album, Bad Debt. This was the band's debut album in the international market and contained nine acoustic tracks. The album featured the notable title track "Bad Debt" and "The Serpent is Kind". The stirring collection examines themes of faith and redemption as well as self and parenthood.
The following year saw the band release their LP, Poor Moon, under the label, Paradise of Bachelors. The limited release of the LP and its subsequent quick sell out prompted a re-release in 2012, this time under the label of Tompkins Square. By the time Hiss Golden Messenger released their next album, they had become a quintet. The eleven song album, Haw was released in 2013 and featured themes of faith, family, spirituality and dread, among others. Notable songs from the album included "Devotion", "Sufferer" and "Busted Note".
Influences and musical style
The band incorporates elements from a variety of genres in their music, including folk, soul, bluegrass, rock, funk and country. The group draws influence from The Beatles, Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds in their music and songwriting. The band's fusion of folk-pop, classic rock and blues has made music critics sometimes draw comparisons between the band and legends such as Bill Callahan, Will Oldham and Bonnie Billy.
First Billboard hit and recent success
Lateness of Dancers is the duo's debut for Merge Records. The album appears more refined than the band's previous releases. It has also won critical and commercial acclaim for the band, earning them a place on the Billboard charts for the first time. The album peaked at number eighteen on the "Top Heatseekers" chart. Lateness of Dancers includes tracks "Lucia", "Mahogany Dread" and "Southern Grammar", among others.
Hiss Golden Messenger's most recent work is the EP titled Southern Grammar. It was released in 2015. It features the notable single "Brother, Do You Know the Road?"and has gained much appreciation in the music community. Courtesy of their recent works and tours, the group has been garnering much fame among folk music audiences. Hiss Golden Messenger tickets are likely to be in great demand among such fans.
