Located in Sonoma County, California, in the United States of America, Healdsburg is a city, which is surrounded by some of Northern California's finest local wine appellations, such as Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Chalk Hill. Thus, Healdsburg is one of Northern California's wine capitals, and is also a business hub for northern Sonoma County. The population of the city according to the 2000 Census was 10,722. The total area comprised by Healdsburg is 9.8 sq. km. where only 0.5% of it is covered with water. With the Russian River flowing through the town, Healdsburg experiences cool and wet winters, and very warm and dry summers.
A step back in the history shows that the area of Healdsburg was first inhabited by Pomo Indians, who had built their villages in the open and fertile valleys along the Russian River. Later, in the 1800s, new settlers came to the area. These were the Russians, who built Fort Ross on the coast. Then, the Mexican government established the vast Rancho Sotoyome here, which covered and area of 48,800-acres.The 1849 California Gold Rush brought nomadic, squatters, and failed miners to the more giving farming land at Healdsburg. Within the year, these squatters settled on the fertile land which was owned by the Fitch family. Soon, construction began in the region.
By 1867 Healdsburg officially got incorporated and the area started to prosper. Suddenly, new buildings started to emerge, taking care of all the necessities of city life, such as a City Hall, a Public Library, a landscaped Plaza, water mains, bridges, and several offices. The trade and commerce in the area increased with the arrival of the Northwestern Pacific Railway in 1871.In the current times, Healdsburg, CA is the main destination in Sonoma wine country, offering many cultural opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
