Details of Dropkick Murphys and the Ticket Luck value
Dropkick Murphys (DKM in short) is a hardcore punk/Celtic folk music band from Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. To date they have released over ten singles, two EP CD, and six albums and have had the good fortune of being able to play across a large portion of the world. Their concerts have become so popular, in fact, that 2003 saw the Murphys move an unprecedented 8,000 tickets for four shows, shattering the venue sales record previously held by the legendary Ramones.
The Bands Days of Infancy
Formed in 1996 in Boston, MA, Dropkick Murphys consisted of just a bunch of friends playing in the basement of a friend's barbershop blending their musical influences of their times (Punk Rock, Irish Folk, Rock, and Hardcore) into one loud, chaotic, and often out of tune mix. Vocalist Mike McColgan, guitarist Rick Barton, and bassist Ken Casey comprised the original nucleus of the group. Rooted in the sounds of The Clash, The Pogues, AC/DC and Stiff Little Fingers, the Murphys started with humble but enthusiastic means releasing a number of EPs and touring to support them. Two years later, the band aligned with Hellcat Records, Tim Armstrong's new imprint for Brett Gurewitz's Epitaph label. In 1998 they issued their first full-length album, Do or Die produced by Armstrong's Rancid-mate Lars Fredriksen. The album lit the musical fuse that soon exploded inside the punk community. It had the bands innovative fusion of blistering rock & roll, and melodic Irish folk which rendered sales of 150,000 largely due to word of mouth in the underground and forged a path in punk rock. Vocalist Mike McColgan exited the group soon after and was replaced by vocalist Al Barr for the follow-up, 1999's The Gang's All Here. Introducing the vocal exchanges of Al Barr and Ken Casey that went on to signify the group's late model sound, DKM's second long player also represented its maturation as songwriters. A rigorous tour schedule followed, helping to expand the bands already sizable worldwide fan base.
Hitting the Stardom
In mid-2000, the band went through an extensive redesign. Marc Orrell stepped in after original guitarist Rick Barton left the band to get married. James Lynch (guitar), Spicy McHaggis (bagpipes), and Ryan Foltz (mandolin) were also added to the lineup to enhance the band's growling sound. Frederiksen, who produced the band's first two albums, left the Dropkicks to venture out on their own for their third studio effort, Sing Loud, Sing Proud. 2001's ambitious Sing Loud Sing Proud incorporated more instrumentation than any previous effort that earned the group even wider acclaim. They outdrew high profile mainstream acts as headliners on major tours and festival participants on four continents -- DKM landed high profile places on the Warped and Punk-O-Rama tours-- plus achieving personal goals by performing at the Sex Pistol's infamous Silver Jubilee gig and on the Boston born Conan O'Brien Show in the wake of Sing Loud.
The Dropkick Murphys incendiary live performances were the subject of their next release, 2002's Live On St. Patrick's Day from Boston, MA. The set was a blistering example of their intense and lively gigs. As the band prepped for the annual Vans Warped Tour in summer 2003, they released Blackout in June; the album featured new bagpipe player Scruffy Wallace and accordionist Tim Brennan. With Blackout, the Dropkick Murphys delivered their finest record. No mere "punk rock" album, its lack of pretension and honesty puts it much closer to the works of Bragg, and even Springsteen.
The Murphys reworked the Boston Red Sox anthem "Tessie" on their mid-2004 EP Tessie, which subsequently became the theme song to the Sox's World Series run that year. The Warrior's Code followed in 2005, and one of its songs, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" was later used in the 2006 Martin Scorsese film The Departed. In 2007 their 6th studio album The Meanest of Times was issued. It is a collection of tales about family, loyalty and remembering where you came from. The album contains all the best elements of the DKM sound: a complex distillation of classic punk rock, Celtic folk and American rocknroll, this album puts the bands diversity, intensity and sincerity on full display.
The Dropkick Murphys have been quite successful in preserving their reputation with an uncompromising spirit and matchless energy to date. The group has built a following by their non stop touring all over the world and their famous St. Patrick's Day weekend shows, which are held in Boston. They are also well known for their affiliation with the Boston Red Sox baseball team, and the Boston Bruins hockey team.
