The band was established in 1981 and comprises of lead vocalist Boy George, bass guitarist Mikey Craig, guitarist and keyboardist Roy Hay and percussionist Jon Moss. Selling more than ten million copies, their second album, "Colour by Numbers" gained widespread success. On its release, the album earned quadruple platinum in the United States and triple platinum in the United Kingdom. Rolling Stone magazine listed it amongst the 100 Best Albums of the 1980s, ranking at number ninety six. It also became part of the book "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die."

The band gained prominence via numerous international hit numbers such as Church of the Poison Mind, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, Victims, The War Song, I'll Tumble 4 Ya, Time (Clock of the Heart) and more. The single Time (Clock of the Heart) made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of "500 songs that shaped rock and roll." Do You Really Want to Hurt Me and Victims were certified gold in the United Kingdom whereas the singles Church of the Poison Mind, I Just Wanna Be Loved and The War Song were certified silver. Karma Chameleon became fairly popular by going platinum in the United Kingdom and gold in the United States.

Culture club is one of the most influential bands of the 80s. The band won the Brit Award for the category "Best British Group" in 1984. They won the Grammy Award for the category "Best British Single" for the track Karma Chameleon and also for the category of "Best New Artist." The group of four was also nominated for the Canadian Juno Award for the category "International Album of the Year."

Over the years, the band has sold more than fifty million records. Ten of their tracks made it to the US Top 40 list. Culture Club blends the American soul music and British new wave with Jamaican reggae along with other styles such as country, calypso or salsa. Since their establishment, they have presented their fans with five studio albums, twenty singles, ten compilation albums and twenty music videos. Their album "Kissing to Be Clever"and "Waking Up with the House on Fire" were certified platinum. The album "Colour by Numbers"earned quadruple platinum status in the United States.

Appreciating the unique blend of genres presented by the band, music critic Stephen Holdenwrote in his article in The New York Times said that Culture Club systematically brings together black and Latin styles. Praising the success of the band primarily in the 80s, Star-News regarded them as the "new rock" band. Allmusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine regarded Culture Club as the most popular rock/pop band of the 80s in England as well as America.
