Formed back in 2010 by two Los Angeles based composers, Ryan Merchant & Sebu Simonian, Capital Cities is among the fastest rising indie pop groups today. The duo attracted mainstream attention with the release of their hit single Safe and Sound. It became the group's first ever track to chart and was also a part of their independently released EP that came out in 2011.
It wasn't long before Capital Cities' popularity spread through the internet and radio airwaves which paved the way for some of their earlier concerts. They now enjoy widespread fan following in different parts of the country, which is why the duo will be going on a tour for their fans all across the United States. As part of the road trip, Capital Cities will be making several stops across the country. Grab your Capital Cities tickets and watch them step on to the stage live.
The seeds for the formation of the band were planted when Merchant came across Simonian online and they started writing jingles back in 2008. The collaboration between the two led to several successful jingles for various ads and commercials. After about three years, the two finally sat down and decided to form an indie pop duo called the Capital Cities. The band debuted with its self-released eponymous E.P back in 2011 which was led by the hit lead single Safe and Sound.
The popularity of the track was enough to attract the attention of various South American radio stations which help them build a solid fan base in that part of the world. Backed by this and their privately funded promotional campaign, Capital Cities finally caught the attention of fans in their own country.
That led to a record deal with Capitol Records in 2012. That was the break they had been looking for and the following year, the duo released its debut album titled, A Tidal Wave of Mystery. It garnered positive feedback from the likes of AllMusic and People Magazine. The album contained the single Safe and Sound which later went platinum in Mexico, Germany, United States, Canada and several other major markets. The song also dominated the U.S Alternative Radio at the number one spot while on the Billboard Hot 100 it captured eighth place. Kangaroo Court was released as the second single from the album and it also got quite a lot of radio airplay.
On April 25, 2013, Capital Cities premiered the official music video of Safe and Sound on VEVO. Mandy Moore was the choreographer and it ended up winning an MTV Video Music Award in the category of Best Visual Effects in addition to a Grammy Award nomination. This was followed by the music video of Kangaroo Court later the same year.
Over the years Capital Cities have performed live in different parts of the world. They embarked on their first ever headlining tour earlier this year along with Gold Fields. Billed as the Dancing with Strangers Tour, the group sold out its New York City performance at the Irving Plaza two months before the event. The duo sold out two more performances at Los Angeles' El Rey Theatre. While on tour, Capital Cities also took the stage at music festivals like ULTRA, SweetLife, and Sundance.
Accompanied by their touring band, Merchant and Simonian have performed in front of thousands at some of the most famous venues in the world. They have trekked across four continents performing for their fans in countries like Japan, Korea, Poland, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Spain and the United States. The group has also performed at several prestigious music festivals across the nation and this year their fans will get to see them take the stage at events like Outside Lands, Bonnaroo and more. The band also accompanied Katy Perry on her first North American leg of the Prismatic World Tour.
Fans of Capital Cities have a lot to look forward to this year. They will be hitting a number of national and international venues in the next few months. So pick your date and get your Capital Cities tickets to watch them live up close and personal.
