Many critics and also music lovers have related the music of the Fountains of Wayne band's to that of the music that was created in the era of the 1970s. Their music can be linked to that of the super hit bands and musicians of the 1970s such as Stealers Wheel, Bruce Springsteen, Nick Lowe and the Eagles. The music that this band creates is completely full of stunningly great electric guitars, acoustic guitars and some repeated yet fantastic octaves on the piano as well as the fabulous wordless vocal harmony choruses. One of the greatest aspects of the band is the fact that their lead vocalist, Chris Collingwood, has unique and absolutely amazing vocals which have been termed as being rather nasal oriented and that they have a sound of sarcasm which is innovative. The main music genres of this brilliant band are pop punk, alternative rock, pop rock and power pop. The band has been actively a part of the music industry and has been creating wonderful music since 1996 till the present day.

The name of the band has been taken from a lawn ornament store in New Jersey. Fountains of Wayne were known by different names in the beginning; llike Are You My Mother and Woolly Mammoth. However, one of the reasons behind the band's successful songs is the unique and unconventional lyrical quality. Thus, the lyrics are reflective of day to day matters of life and business; they are rational, meaningful, and relatable. In other words their songs revolve around storytelling which is considered as their unique selling point. The history of Fountains of Wayne goes back to 1996, the year when the band came up with their first self-titled debut album. It generated hit singles like Radiation Vibe and Sink to the Bottom with former reaching thirty-two spot in the United Kingdom and number fourteen on U.S Billboard Alternative Songs Chart. Shortly after being recognized for their efforts, the band started touring endlessly and was also blessed with an opportunity to perform with the legendary rock bands; The Smashing Pumpkins, The Lemonheads and Sloan right in the beginning of their career. Whereas the latter reached number forty-two in the UK and ended up at number seven in Norway.

Their song, That Thing You Do, featured in the Tom Hanks' movie, earned the band instant success and critical acclaim. Not only that, it also amassed an Oscar nomination and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gold certification. Moreover, Survival Car, Hey Julie, Troubles Times, Red Dragon Tattoo, and I Want an Alien for Christmas are also among the hit singles produced by the band. Fountains of Wayne released their second album titled Utopia Parkway in 1999. The album unveiled the band's signature style as far as the lyrics were concerned. It reflected the concept based on the life in modern suburbia. Thus the album was showered with applause by both, the fans and the critics and paved the way for positive reviews. It was also referred to as the album of the week in People Magazine.

The year 1999 was the period of their disappearance which occured as a result of the band's conflicts with the label. After a hiatus of several years Fountains of Wayne re-emerged and came up with their third album called Welcome Interstate Managers which turned out to be milestone in the band's history. Just as the band's existence was about to get wiped out the president of MTV put them out of misery. She gave them the exposure and the boost they needed to make a strong comeback. Consequently, the music video of Stacy's Mom proved to be a life savior. It not only gave the band the recognition they had been longing for but also earned them two Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Vocal Performance By A Duo or Group. After the massive success of the song there was no looking back for the Fountains of Wayne.

Later the band released three more albums; Out-of-State Plates in 2005, which also include the hit single Baby One More Time by Britney Spears. Traffic and Weather came out in 2007 which was widely appreciated and lauded by the Blender Magazine. Their song 1-95 was no less than an epic as it was named one of the year's Top 50 Songs by Rolling Stone. Sky Full of Holes was another album produced by the band in 2009. In 2010 the band made their presence felt as they performed at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and set the stage on fire. The year 2011 welcomed them with a U.S tour while later joining the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. The band is back with their tour so buy Fountains of Wayne tickets and avail the opportunity of being at an exclusive event.
