The Wichita State Shockers is the name given to the various athletic teams that play for the "Wichita State University". These teams have all been classified by the "Missouri Valley Conference" as being part of the "NCAA Division I". They are perhaps best known for their baseball program which has the biggest fan following out of any other sports group. They have performed exceedingly well in the particular sport as well, ranking at number one in teams with the highest winning percentage out of any baseball team in the country for the last 31 years. The football games will be played at the "Cessna Stadium" while the basketball match will take place at the "Charles Koch Arena". In the past years "Eck Stadium" has become the official venue for the university's baseball matches. Other facts on the team the fans planning to attend any of the games should know are that their official colors are black and gold, and WuShock is their mascot. Wichita has a separate team for men and women for all the various sports-baseball, cross country, basketball, golf, track and field and tennis. The women play two extra sports; volleyball and softball.
 
The name of the sports teams comes from the collective name of the student body itself-Shockers. This in itself comes from the university's history in wheat. The earliest students would earn money for their education by shocking and harvesting wheat. This is why there are two shocks of wheat as the symbol for the teams. At the time, the wheat fields would even become the venue for the football games. In 1904, it was proposed that the football team be named the "WheatShockers". Even though this never officially became the title that the varsity team would adopt, it caught on with the students and survives today in its shortened form-the Shockers.
 
By 1948, the student body was deciding upon the official symbol for the university's sports team, and thus the idea for a shock of wheat was put forth for the first time. Next came the decision to choose an apt mascot. It was a student in the junior year, Wilbur Elsea who designed one that would exemplify the school's spirit. The entire student body was invited to pool in ideas in a completion, but it was his design that took the win. The name "WuShock" was chosen by Jack Kersting, also in a competition to suggest a name.
 
The students are thus gearing up once more for the different matches that have been scheduled for the university in the months to come. People not only from the university, but from all over the country have been invited to watch. With the increasing interest in college sports in the mainstream media and the team's high reputation cheap Wichita State Shockers tickets are expected to sell out quite quickly.
