Denton
The City of Denton is situated in the Denton County, TX and is the county seat of the Denton County. Both the city and the county were named after the Indian Fighter and a Lawyer, John B. Denton.
The City of Denton was founded in 1857, however it was incorporated in 1866 and the first ever mayor of the city was J. B. Sawyer. The city is stretched across 62.3 Square Miles of land of which only 0.8 Miles is water. Chiefly, the City of Denton relies on its agricultural industry, and due to this Denton saw a major boost in the increment of the citys population. Afterwards the establishment of two universities in the city attracted huge flocks of students from different places as well.
As of the census reading carried out in July 2007, Denton is the 24th largest city in Texas. Census of 2000 reveals that the total population of the city comprises of 80,537 people that are divided amongst 16,405 families. Racially the population of the is divided in to 75.65% of Caucasians, 9.12% African Americans, 3.39% Asians, 0.58% Native Americans, 0.05% Pacific Islanders, 16.38% Hispanics or Latinos, 2.40% of Mixed race, and 8.85% of other races. The per capita income of the Denton was $19,365, while the median income for the family came out to be $51,419.
Texas Womans University and University of North Texas are the two universities that are situated in the city of Denton. Combining the enrollments of both the universities, the head count of the students is easily more than 45,000 students. In the state of Texas, University of North Texas is the third largest university.
Denton City is also home to Denton Arts and Jazz Festival that is held every year in the last week of April. The festival is held at the Civic Center Park and offers live concerts, crafts, performing arts, food and drinks and other recreations every year to more than 200,000 people who attend the festival. Apart from that North Texas State Fair and Rodeo is also staged in Denton, TX. The fair showcases Dentons diverse musical culture and usually lasts for about 9 days. Previously the musicians who performed at the fair include The Bellamy Brothers, Charlie Robison, Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, Restless Heart, Radney Foster, Bruce Robinson and many others.
Other upcoming events this year include Denton Air Fair and Air show. This year the air show would be held on June 20, 2009 and will feature Texas Twisters Formation team, US Navy F/A - 18C, Trojan Phlyers, Mike Gallaway and Flight of the Phoenix.
The celebration of Juneteeth is also held at the city of Denton. It is to celebrate the end of slavery. This year the Juneteeth would be celebrated on June 20, 2009 at the Fred Moore Park in Denton.
